Call quality is clear and dropouts are extremely rare, while signal strength also holds up well in difficult circumstances. Battery life has hugely improved from the early Ultras and should give around three days with moderate use - although keen snappers will enjoy much less. Samsung has really gone back to basics with this handset and as a result has produced a dependable, stylish option for the multimedia-centric buyer.
While it doesn't go shouting its credentials from the rooftops, the G succeeds in presenting a genuine rival to the current big-hitting cameraphones in a far more attractive package. You know where you are with this phone, and the lack of gimmicks for once leaves the user in complete control. North America. Home Reviews Mobile Phones. Our Verdict.
For 5-megapixel camera in slim body Improved interface Google search. Against No 3G Lack of innovation in design Flash could be improved. TechRadar Verdict. Overall, the G is a nicely designed phone. Rounded edges give the handset a smooth and streamlined feel, and all buttons on the handset are large and well-spaced; both on top of the phone and including the numeric keypad under the slider. The camera lens for the 5-megapixel shooter is also concealed beneath the sliding mechanism which seems a better solution than the bulky lens cover of the Nokia N95 or to going without a cover, as with LG's Viewty.
The only downside to the camera placement is that you don't have much of the phone to hold onto after sliding the phone open and turning the handset sideways to take photos with the dedicated camera button on the side, which is necessary as the auto-focus tool only works when using the dedicated key. The G sports a 2. The user interface is attractive and well laid out; all applications and setting options are exactly where you'd expect to find them.
Features In a way, the G is a bit light on when it comes to features. It seems ridiculous saying that considering the fact that the phone has a 5-megapixel camera onboard, however, the camera aside, there's not much else of note to report. The G has a built-in Web browser but, be warned, at GPRS data speeds the Web experience on the G is slow and will have you scanning the room frantically for a PC, or alternatively, have you tugging out your hair.
The G also has a good collection of kitschy, fun mobile games to play; including a soccer game, a racing game and -- prepare to gasp -- "Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest". These games are far from selling points but they are a fun way to kill time on a train platform or to while away that interminable visit to Grandma's place.
Performance Let's cut straight to the chase: how does the camera perform? After being disappointed by two of the three 5-megapixel camera phones we've reviewed so far, we didn't start our testing with high hopes. The G turned out to be a star performer, mostly. Outdoors the landscape photos we took looked fantastic, sharp focus, true colour reproduction and clear detail.
There are several presets but you can create ones of your own too. The number of the main menu icons displayed is a total of twelve.
You can choose whether list menus should be available as pop-ups Samsung old-school that come up when you highlight a menu item, or not. The other three available themes plus the Create Theme option. The Samsung G is also the first Samsung handset to actually have full-featured ringing profiles.
All we used to get with previous models was the Silent and Normal ringing modes. Now there's a choice of 5 profiles, including the Offline mode. Ringing profiles are here for the first time. Another new thing about the menu system is that all settings are put together in one place - phone, light, display, messages, calls, phonebook settings, etc.
A centralized setting for choosing the default memory for different applications is also available - you can set that for the camera, voice recorder, FM radio with the G you can record FM broadcasts , Bluetooth, WAP downloads, etc - all in the same place.
It's really convenient. The phonebook of the Samsung G can store up to contacts with multiple fields. It can display the names from the phone memory only or all names from both the phone memory and the SIM card at once.
Searching employs gradual typing. A total of 12 fields of information are available for each contact. You can store up to 5 numbers for each contact, plus an email address and a note. Each contact can also be assigned a specific ringtone and picture; contacts can be organized into groups. Individual contact details or your whole contacts list can be sent via Bluetooth. Unlike Samsung E, the G now has a field for a contact's birthday.
